Creating Value from Plastic Waste along the Yangtze River
JingSu aims at establishing collection and recycling of plastic waste generated from single-use Food and Beverage Containers (FaBCs) in the city of Suzhou. With the continuous increase in demand for single-use consumption patterns derived from take-away food services, the amount of waste plastic packaging has rapidly increased. JingSu specifically addresses sustainable management of FaBCs waste, often considered of low value, by collecting it, sorting it and recycling it, hence supporting the city of Suzhou to increase the scope of what is considered recyclable. JingSu is fully integrated with the ecosystem of local authorities, waste management companies, NGOs and residents; contributing towards the 2025 targets of China’s Plastic Pollution Control Action Plan. The initiative is powered by the Alliance to End Plastic Waste, implemented by GIZ and supported by the Suzhou Environmental and Sanitation Agency in cooperation with Suzhou SZT.
The JingSu Activities
JingSu supports the local authorities and people of Suzhou to improve the city’s plastic waste management system by collaborating with a broad spectrum of stakeholders from the plastic value chain including the private sector, educational institutions, residents and local NGOs. The project targets 4 areas of work.

Start From home. Recycle your FaBCs plastic waste!
Plastics play a vital role in our daily lives. Many of your everyday food orders or groceries are wrapped and packaged with the versatile material. However, after their usage, plastic packaging and single-use food containers are often carelessly discarded or end up in waste incinerators or in the environment – with complete disregard for value of the material and leading to harmful emissions or environmental damage. What can you do to change this and keep Yangtze and the city clean? By segregating your plastic waste at home. The simple task of throwing FaBCs waste in the right bin or returning it to your local collection shops can help reduce plastic waste entering our streets, incinerators, landfills, and rivers. Better still, through separate treatment, this plastic waste can be recycled and reused for new products, so its environmental and economic value is retained in our economy. Do your part! It all starts with knowing which waste is considered FaBCs plastics.

Why should I recycle my plastic waste?
Segregating your waste at home is the first step towards an efficient recycling process. By throwing "low-value plastics" FaBCs in the appropriate bins or returning them to collection houses or collection vehicles in your area, you can help reduce the leakage of waste into the environment, facilitate the recycling process and enable faster circularity into the economy. This simple practice has several advantages:
